Following abdominal surgery, gall-bladder surgery, c-sections, or bariatric surgery, the muscles and protective fascia of the abdominal wall may thin and separate during healing, thus allowing your intestines and other intraabdominal contents to herniate through weaknesses in your abdominal muscles. If the weaknesses occur at previous surgical incisions, the hernia is more specifically known as an incisional hernia.
An incisional hernia, otherwise known as a ventral hernia, has a much higher potential to develop in the post-bariatric or massive weight loss patient, due to higher intraabdominal pressures, excessive abdominal wall forces, and poor nutrition. Incisional or ventral hernias may cause significant pain and may eventually lead to strangulation of the tissues leading to an emergency situation. As a dual-board certified general and critical care surgeon along with board-certification in cosmetic surgery, Dr. Michael Thornton has acquired advanced experience in the surgical treatment and repair of simple and complex abdominal wall hernias and if indicated, the abdominal hernia repair can be performed during the time of an abdominoplasty.
Incisional or ventral hernia repair is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, but on occasion and depending on the complexity of the hernia, you may require a brief hospital stay, as all individuals are unique in their presentation. Most medical insurance companies WILL cover the expenses of incisional / ventral hernia repair and we accept all major medical insurance network plans; regrettably, insurance companies will not cover the expenses of additional cosmetic surgical procedures. However, we will work with your insurance company to provide you with the best financial resolution. In addition, Mansfield Cosmetic Surgery Center accepts all major credit cards and offers special financing plans specially designed for cosmetic surgery procedures.
